Helping Others

I believe that selfless giving is one of the duties and joys of life. I'm not big on charities or organized aid - I've found that as they scale up they often get inefficient or corrupt. I've found that giving personal time to those who truly need help is very rewarding, whether it's helping someone get their life back on track through personal coaching or something as simple as being available to an older friend who can't (and shouldn't) be getting up on a ladder to change a light bulb. One of our neighbors asked for some help changing smoke detector batteries and I tried to convince her that I help her for my benefit as much as hers. I truly believe in service to others and that small, humble acts are the ones that change the world. I learned many good lesson in the Boy Scouts and the slogan " Do a good turn daily " is something I try to live up to.

Building a Team

Now that I'm on my own again, I started to build a new team to help me plan out the next phase of our lives. Being part of a team where I can engage with others who have their own expertise is the key to whatever my next phase of life will be. While I've never been a particularly social person, I do know I can't do my best totally on my own. As I've gotten older, many of those who I relied on in the past have retired or moved on. Luann and I have started to process of looking for new attorneys, accountants and financial experts. I believe our personal life should have the same discipline and resources that any startup should have, and that begins with good people.

I believe - I found

As I've been writing I find myself using two phrases: "I believe" and "I found". The first reflects my hopes and latter reflects my experience.

CES 2018

I woke up and watched some summaries from this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Two presentations caught my intersted; Nvidia and Samsung. We're clearly on the verge of the next new thing and I'm starting to see where the market will be going. Both companies are betting big on artificial intelligence and affordable supercomputing.

I always thought Nvidia as the company that made graphics hardware for PCs but I see now that they've been into many more interesting areas. Deep Learning is a bit of a buzz phrase but I see Nvidia as a serious player in a field that has enormous potential.
